Grounded/Quick Recovery Attacks:
Press

when grounded to perform a Quick Recovery.
If you don't press any buttons, you'll do a normal recovery.
Holding

results in a Delayed Recovery.
Certain special moves performed on the ground can trigger a Recovery Attack, which is invincible for the first 8 frames.
These attacks will hit opponents who try to attack you during that time.

Jump Attacks:
Use Jump Attacks to hit airborne opponents.
They can knock the opponent down, start a chain combo, or initiate a juggle combo.

Super Meter:
Your Super Meter (3 sections, bottom of the screen) fills by performing special moves, getting hit, or having your attacks blocked.
It powers Enhanced Moves (1 bar), Breakers (2 bars), and X-Ray Attacks (3 bars).
Managing your meter depends on reading your opponent, your health, and attack setups.
Some players use it quickly, while others save for Breakers or X-Rays.

Tag Attacks:
Tag Attacks let your partner join the match and perform a special attack, throw a projectile, or set up a combo.
Your partner cannot be damaged during their attack.

Enhanced Moves:
Press

while performing a special move to Enhance it, consuming 1 bar of your Super Meter.
Enhanced moves are more powerful and sometimes alter the move's properties (e.g., Jade's shadow flash becomes invincible).

X-Ray Attacks:
Press (

) or (

) when your Super Meter has 3 bars.
X-Ray attacks can be part of combos and juggle the opponent afterward.
They're powerful, with armor for the first 2 frames, and will ignore up to 3 attacks from your opponent.
If you attempt an X-Ray with no health left, the first attack from your opponent will end the round.

High Attacks:
These hit standing opponents but miss ducking ones.
They're often used in chain combos or mid-screen juggles.
Don't assume they always hit high - some may look like they do but actually don't.

Medium Attacks:
Medium attacks hit standing or ducking opponents.
They're critical for breaking your opponent's defense, especially in chain combos.
Some medium attacks may look like low attacks, causing opponents to block low, making them vulnerable to other attacks.

Low Attacks:
Low attacks require crouching to block.
They can knock down the opponent or slightly stun them.
Low attacks are effective after high attacks or as combo starters.

Overhead Attacks:
These hit ducking opponents who are blocking low.
Some overheads can also pop the opponent into the air.
Use overheads to force your opponent to block high, then follow up with low attacks or grabs.

Pop-Up Attacks:
Pop-up attacks launch opponents into the air, allowing for follow-up juggle combos.
You can also pop up by jumping and pressing

.

Uppercuts:
Uppercuts are anti-air moves to stop opponents from jumping.
Press (

). Some characters' uppercuts have faster start-ups.

Combo Starter:
Jump in with

to start chain combos.
This is a great way to pressure your opponent and open up combo opportunities.

Chain Combo:
A chain combo is a sequence of predetermined inputs for multiple hits.
For example, press

in succession.
To help with timing, hold down the last button after pressing the second one.
Combo effectiveness depends on speed, recovery time, and how they mix high, medium, and low attacks.

Special Move Cancels:
After an attack, you can cancel it into a special move for more confusion or a combo extension.
For example, after pressing Crouching

, quickly input Jade's shadow kick motion.

Corner:
Being in the corner allows for high damage combos but also makes you vulnerable.
If you're on defense, try to escape the corner as soon as possible.

Breakers:
Use Breakers (when you have 2 bars on your Super Meter) to stop an opponent's combo.
Hold (

) to perform a Breaker. Some characters can perform special moves after a successful Breaker.

Throws:
Press

to throw your opponent.
You can also perform a forward throw by pressing (

) or a back throw by pressing (

).
Ducking opponents can avoid throws, but they're vulnerable to medium and low attacks unless blocking.

Dash Canceling & Block Canceling:
To dash cancel, input F, F after a move. To block cancel, press (

).
These techniques help you perform complex combos or move quickly between offense and defense.

Juggles & Air Combat:
Juggling is crucial in Mortal Kombat. Perform a standing

, then follow up with special moves for juggle combos.
Experiment with different moves for extended juggles.

Block Damage & Damage Scaling:
Block damage favors aggressive players, as any attack hitting a blocking opponent deals damage.
Damage from repeated attacks (e.g., chain combos or special moves) scales down, but changing your combo resets it.
Damage remains the same if the opponent is blocking.

Tag Combos & Fast Tags:
In Tag mode, press

to tag your partner into the match. You can also use Tag Attacks or Tag Assists.
Each character has unique tag combos and assists, which are crucial for creating combos and mix-ups.
Use fast tags to safely swap characters and extend your combos.

Babalities: You must not press

in the final round.

Finisher Distances Explained:
Close: Right next to your opponent.
Sweep: A couple of steps away (close enough to land a sweep).
Jump: One jump distance away from your opponent.
Fullscreen: As far apart as possible (opponent at the other side of the screen).
Anywhere: Distance doesn't matter, can be any range (Sweep or further works best).
Varies: For some reason, the Stage Fatalities in this game have their distance listed as "Varies". However, regardless of the label, all Stage Fatalities should be performed at Close range.

Note: You can hold

to input fatalities, as long as

is released before the last button in the Fatality sequence is pressed.

Bio:
A skilled Motswana warrior, Cyrax relies on his natural fighting ability, his chi, to carry out Lin Kuei missions. He is reluctant to lose his humanity, which he believes is more effective than any mechanical augmentation. Bio:

Bio:

Jax

Bio:

With Lieutenant Sonya Blade, he has seized many of their weapons caches. But when a trusted informant, Kano, was revealed to be a high-ranking member of the Black Dragon, Jax made Kano's capture his priority. Kano has gotten the better of Jax thus far, leading the Special Forces into numerous deadly ambushes. Bio:

Bio:
Kung Lao's ancestor was defeated by Goro 500 years ago in the pivotal match that saw Shang Tsung attain control of the Mortal Kombat tournament. To him, this contest is about more than Earthrealm's freedom. His life's goal has been to slay Goro and win the tournament, thus restoring his family's honor. After being defeated by Liu Kang in a qualifying bout, he disguised himself as one of Shang Tsung's guards to gain admittance. Kung Lao believes he is ready for the challenge. Bio:
Orphaned at a very young age, Liu Kang was raised by Shaolin monks, who taught him the way of the spiritual warrior. They soon recognized his potential as a contender for the Mortal Kombat tournament and rigorously trained him for this task. Raiden, too, understood that Liu Kang was Earthrealm's best hope for freedom and introduced him to Master Bo' Rai Cho to further his development. Once fully trained, Liu Kang bested all challengers and earned the high honor of representing the Shaolin in the Mortal Kombat tournament. He and Raiden then embarked on their fateful journey to Shang Tsung's island to compete in this pivotal kontest.

Bio:
Noob Saibot's origins are unknown, but he is likely a revenant: a fallen warrior resurrected by the Netherrealm sorcerer Quan Chi to fulfill a dark objective. A faithful servant and a recent addition to the Brotherhood of Shadow, he will obey his master, Quan Chi, and complete his mission. But he is biding his time. Raiden

Bio:
Raiden is the God of Thunder and Protector of Earthrealm. Ageless and wise beyond measure, he leads Earthrealm's mortals in the endless battle against the forces of darkness. When Shao Kahn, Emperor of Outworld, threatened to merge his realm with Earthrealm, an overwhelmed Raiden implored the Elder Gods to give Earthrealm a fighting chance. Thus the Mortal Kombat tournament was created. For millennia Shao Kahn has been kept at bay, but nine consecutive losses to Goro have eroded hope that Earthrealm can be saved. Bio:
His home realm of Zaterra is gone, mysteriously destroyed ages ago. Reptile is the last known surviving member of his race. He has since made Outworld his home. Bio:
Hanzo Hasashi was once a member of the Japanese Shirai Ryu ninja clan. Sektor

Bio:
The son of the Grand Master, it was never in question that Sektor would join the Lin Kuei. What pleases the Grand Master is the degree to which his son relishes the life of an assassin. The secretive clan allows Sektor to express his darker nature, using any means necessary to complete his tasks. Hired by Shang Tsung, his current assignment is to attend the Mortal Kombat tournament and eliminate the Earthrealm competitors before they have a chance to compete. Though this mission will put his clan in good standing with Shao Kahn, Sektor's ultimate goal is to supplant his father as Grand Master of the Lin Kuei.

Bio:
A treacherous sorcerer who consumes the souls of his victims, Shang Tsung has played host to the last nine Mortal Kombat tournaments in Earthrealm, stacking the odds in favor of his master. Originally from Earthrealm, Shang Tsung's magical abilities led him to discover the realm of Outworld. There he fell in league with its ruler, Shao Kahn, and pledged his life to him in return for enhanced power. He is now bound to the emperor by powerful dark magic. For centuries he has submissively done Shao Kahn's bidding. Should he fail in his mission to secure Earthrealm, he will suffer the emperor's wrath.

Sheeva

Bio:
Sheeva is a member of the four-armed Shokan race. Her markings reveal that she is of the royal Draco lineage. Like all Shokan, she pledged her life to Shao Kahn, bringing honor to her race by serving him. During an attack by Edenian rebels on Shao Kahn's fortress, Sheeva fiercely protected Queen Sindel and prevented her capture. She was subsequently appointed Sindel's personal bodyguard until the queen's mysterious death in Earthrealm. Sheeva is now the master jailer of Shao Kahn's oppressive dungeon.

Bio:
For years the swordsman Kenshi traveled the world in search of worthy opponents. When a mysterious elderly man named Song offered to show him the location of Sento, an ancient sword worthy of his abilities, Kenshi succumbed to pride. He followed Song to a tomb wherein lay the Well of Souls. When Kenshi retrieved the sword, spirits of ancient warriors spewed forth, blinding him. Song then revealed himself to be Shang Tsung. He consumed the souls, leaving Kenshi in the dark labyrinth to die. But Sento called to Kenshi. It led him out of the tomb and revealed his lost heritage as a descendant of the warriors who had been buried there. Kenshi vowed to slay Shang Tsung and free the souls of his ancestors.

Bio:
A malevolent spirit of the Dream Realm, Freddy Krueger preys on the souls of the living as they sleep. When Shao Kahn began to steal Earthrealm's souls - souls Freddy considered his own - Freddy battled the emperor in the Dream Realm. But Shao Kahn's will was too strong. He pulled Freddy into the real world, where he was mortal, and defeated him. A badly injured yet determined Freddy fitted both his hands with demonically enhanced razor gloves. Once he has killed Shao Kahn, he will find a way back to the Dream Realm, where he will torment Earthrealm's souls for eternity.

Kintaro killed his opponent and, in an unprecedented act of bravado, roared for more Centaur blood. Centaurs leapt furiously into the ring to their demise. This savagery led Shao Kahn to appoint Kintaro his personal bodyguard.
